About the Position: Serves as the Range Safety Specialist within the Range Operations Branch. The range complex consists of 76,374 acres, subdivided into 32 separate training areas, 4 permanent impact areas, 87 live fire ranges, 38 artillery firing points etc. Position is located at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA.

Duties

Work jointly with the Chief, Range Operations Branch and Facilities Manager in the planning, development and execution of the programs, policies and procedures involved in the safe operation of live fire ranges and training areas. Provide safety review and operational management oversight for functioning Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM) Live Fire Ranges and Training Areas. Develop and apply live fire safety hazard analysis techniques to ensure that range safety requirements are adhered to in the scheduling of range use, maintenance, modification, and installation of ranges and training facilities. Draw and approve Surface Danger Zone diagrams to include minimum/maximum ranges, right and left azimuths of fire, ricochet and dispersion areas for all types of weapon systems. Provides safety related input to the Facilities Manager regarding changes to or new firing requests.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • The incumbent of this position must be able to obtain and maintain a valid State and government driving license.
  • The incumbent will be required to walk long distances over uneven terrain while wearing Kevlar/Flak vest sometimes during inclement weather; a pre-employment physical is required.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) you must report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes the detailed safety coordination involved in the planning, preparation, and conduct of live fire exercises, which closely simulates combat firing exercises. and/or draw and/or approve Surface Danger Zone diagrams for direct, indirect and aerial weapons systems. and/or Advise leaders on safety issues pertaining to live fire and maneuver ranges. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Management. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Administration and ManagementCustomer ServiceFirearmsTechnical Competence Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
