The primary purpose of this position is: To serve as a senior systems administrator with responsibility for planning and coordinating the installation, testing, modifying, upgrading, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of hardware and software systems.

Duties

Performs services as a senior systems administrator Serves as a senior specialist and focal point for the installation's IT operating systems. Develops and recommends technical solutions prior to acquisition efforts. Evaluates new, large systems engineering technology and its effects on a complex operating environment.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Information Technology (IT) Management Series, GS-2210 (Alternate A). https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-standards/2200/information-technology-it-management-series-2210-alternative-a/??? Experience: Must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below: Attention to Detail, Customer Service, Oral Communication, and Problem Solving AND one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-11 (or equivalent in other pay systems) which includes Application of systems integration methods, performance tuning methods, test and evaluation methods and procedures, IT security principles and methods, and project management principles and methods sufficient to plan and coordinate the installation of new products or equipment, configuration management methods and techniques for integrating information system components sufficient to install and maintain software and hardware, optimize functionality of systems, and diagnose and recover failed systems. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-11 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-12 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of current server platforms, network components, virtual servers, virtual drives, and server architecture relating to clustering, mirroring, memory utilization, storage area networks, and backups to include operating systems software principles, practices, and methods; life cycle management techniques; and IT infrastructure within an operating environment, new and emerging information technologies, and security methods and principles. 2. Knowledge of network enterprise collaborative tools, applying templates, managing storage, user accounts, and web pages. 3. Knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices for integrating information system components sufficient to plan, coordinate, and administer computer systems, and optimize system performance to include knowledge of network enterprise tools for configuration changes, updating software, vulnerability identification and remediation, and software and hardware alerts. 4. Knowledge of performance tuning tools, database management (various databases and the syntax to be able to extract, manipulate, interpret information from databases), and project management methods sufficient to optimize systems performance, troubleshoot database performance problems, and perform a wide range of systems administration functions 5. Knowledge of IT principles, practices, system analysis concepts and methods to install, configure, test, and implement modifications and to interface hardware and software programs with operating systems. Ability to apply methods and practices for troubleshooting (OS, server, and network), recovering, adjusting, modifying, and improving systems to solve complex problems, provide support that minimizes interruptions in service to customers, and maintain liaison with industry and other activities to provide awareness of state-of-the-art technology. Knowledge of the latest advancements in technology to initiate corrective or preventative action to ensure optimum performance of the system 6. Ability to communicate effectively and successfully convey complex technical information to non-technical personnel; includes but is not limited to preparing studies, correspondence, and preparing/presenting briefings. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
