Duties

Plan, coordinate, and execute the work of the Casualty Operations Coordinator. Plan work methods and ensure accomplishment of program objectives. Responsible for all technical issues and related governing policies. Research guidance, policy, and procedures on casualty and mortuary affairs for operational efficiency. Work closely with Casualty Assistance Officer and Casualty Notification Officer. Establish internal measures to process and submit casualty report information. Execute casualty notifications and assign casualty Assistance Officer to the case. Ensure mortuary benefits are applied and implemented in accordance with policies and procedures. Ensure burial honors/entitlements are given to all Veterans in accordance with established laws, regulations and guidance. Communicate directly with family of deceased service members in order to express condolences, coordinate casualty actions, etc. Attend meetings and represent the Casualty Assistance Center. Conduct briefings to higher level officials on the program and provide advice and guidance as needed. Prepare and conduct training on the Casualty Assistance Program. Respond to Congressional and other inquiries concerning Casualty Affairs Program.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes planning and executing the work of the Casualty Affairs program; interpreting and implementing guidance, regulations and policies to the responsibilities of the program, coordinating casualty services such as mortuary services, burial honors and benefits for family members of a deceased service member; Strong interpersonal skills and oral communication skills while providing customer service to distressed and emotional customers. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position such as a Casualty Operations Specialist. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Interpersonal SkillsOral CommunicationPlanning and Evaluating Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).
