About the Position: Serves as a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist with the U.S Army Parachute Team, a specialized organization that represents the Department of the Army and is best known as "The Golden Knights". Their mission is the promotion of Army Recruiting, Public Relations, and Army Prestige, competition at National and International levels, and the development, conduct, testing, research, and advisories on military free-fall parachute equipment, techniques, and safety matters.

Duties

Manage the organizations safety and occupational health procedures to ensure operational safety of existing practices. Observe activities of organization to conduct inspections for improvement recommendations. Deliver occupational and health safety training to employees within assigned organization. Interpret workplace safety and occupational health requirements to inform personnel of program changes. Track various personnel positions training requirements for compliance with regulations. Provide training to personnel to ensure compliance with occupational requirements. Provide detailed reports of incidents to recommend changes to protocol. Conduct briefings for leadership after investigations to keep them abreast of incidents. Conduct thorough and detailed post mishap investigations.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain, possess and maintain a current valid state and military motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Must be able to successfully take and pass a pre-employment physical examination and any periodic occupational health examinations.
  • Must complete within 18 months of assuming duties one of the following Army Safety qualifications: Professional Certificate in Safety and Occupational Health, Aviation Safety Officer Course, Ground Safety Officer Course.
  • TDY requirements up to 33%; This can range from a few months to a few days in duration, including approximately two months at the Annual Certification Cycle Training, typically mid-January through mid-March each year.
  • Must be available for callback duty in the event of an accident to participate in site information collection and reporting services.
  • This position is subject to random drug testing.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes utilizing safety or occupational health standards to analyze requirements for multiple organizational activities (i.e., parachuting events, aircraft piloting, aircraft operations, and aircraft maintenance); conducting safety assessment or inspections to eliminate hazardous situations; assisting in the implementation of aircraft or parachuting safety procedures; utilizing established databases to track personnel training and security requirements. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09 or above). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Accident/Mishap and Hazard Investigation and ReportingAccountabilityCompliance Inspection and Program ManagementSafety and Health Training and Education Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).
