You will serve as a SUPERVISORY ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION SPECIALIST in the Environmental Operations Branch (Code 106.32) of the Environmental Division (Code 106.3), Occupational Safety, Health, and Environment Office (Code 106) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.
Duties
You will follow federal, state, EPA, and Navy regulations on regulated waste, hazardous waste, Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB), and Asbestos waste.
You will advise environmental staff on changes in the regulations and expected impact on shipyard management procedures.
You will oversees the operation of NNSY's bulk container and non-bulk container programs to include pick-up and transportation of NNSY’s regulated waste, hazardous waste, PCB, and Asbestos waste.
You will manage the operations of regulated waste, hazardous waste, PCB, and Asbestos waste at NNSY to include proper handling, identification, storage, repackaging, disposal, and sampling.
Requirements

- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
- Supervisors in the executive branch have a heightened personal responsibility for advancing government ethics. You will be required to review the 14 General Principles of Ethical Conduct at 5 CFR 2635.101.
Qualifications
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience with hazardous waste, PCB, and asbestos management, packing, and shipping; Experience collaborating with others to achieve the mission.
Experience leading, motivating and developing others in the environmental field.
Experience communicating across all levels of shipyard management and ship's force leadership.
Experience providing knowledge of other major EPA legislation including Clean Air and Clear Water Acts.
Experience demonstrating previous experience in electronic systems used to track and manage hazardous materials and waste.
Experience providing basic knowledge of shipyard Solid Waste operations including recycling and tipping platform operations.
