This position is located in the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Human Resources Division, Compensation, Benefits and Processing Unit.
This position primary purpose is to provide information, guidance, counseling, and formal training to employees of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on Federal employee benefits.

As a Human Resources Specialist (Employee Benefits)your typical work assignments may include:
Explaining Social Security benefits and aspects of Social Security law relating specifically to Federal retirees.
Explaining tax implications regarding retirement annuities and the TSP.
Conducting and administering the retirement program for a significant organizational segment of DEA.
Advising top management on laws and regulations governing mandatory retirement and criteria for exemption.
Counseling survivors of deceased employees on death benefits, including survivor annuities, TSP, FEGLI, FEHB, paid compensation, tax implications, and processes death benefit applications.
Administers the annual FEHB Open Season and FEGLI Open Seasons as they occur.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet the Specialized Experience requirements as noted below. All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Qualification claims will be subject to verification.
You may qualify at the GS-13 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private sector) that demonstrate your ability in: (1) Understanding interrelated program issues that affect long-range program planning, design, and execution; (2) Researching statutory, regulatory, court and/or administrative precedents, and other legal opinion or documentary material; and (3) Counseling employees who qualifies for retirement benefits under two or more programs, such as military retirement and Social Security and federal civilian programs.
Specialized experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience for this position includes:
