About the Position: Serves as principal Safety and Occupational Health Specialist at the Corps and Division level of an Army Command or equivalent. The program embraces a diversity of high risk factors to meet training and mission readiness requirements. The duties and responsibilities of this position require or authorize the individual to participate in the formulation, development, implementation, and enforcement of the Safety Program's policies, directives and regulatory guidance.

Duties

Provide guidance to all operating levels concerning safety requirements and responsibilities. Plans and organizes a continuous program involving occupational safety and health for both military and civilian personnel. Ensures compliance and enforcement of various Safety and Occupational Health subprograms. Monitors work area and evaluate activities with known safety problems as indicated by a high record of work injuries, hazardous operations and environmental conditions. Conduct independent and joint risk management studies for operation/exercises and assist with risk management decisions.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This is a deployable Department of the Army Civilian position.
  • In accordance with AR 690-11, this position has been designated as "Emergency-Essential".
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential".
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 50% of the time (CONUS/OCONUS).
  • This position requires the incumbent to possess, or obtain and maintain, a valid regular or official U.S. Passport.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position is subject to the provisions of the Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban commonly referred to as the Lautenberg Amendment.
  • Must be able to qualify individually on common tasks selected by the supervisor from the Unit's Mission Essential Task List (METL).
  • Incumbent must complete all required training and achieve the CP-12 Level 1 and Explosives Safety Level 1 professional certificates within 12 months, or prior to deployment, as outlined in the 0018 job series Master Training Plan.
  • Work requires frequent onsite surveys with prolonged standing, walking, crawling, climbing, bending, crouching, stretching, reaching and other physical movements.
  • May be required to wear protective clothing and equipment.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Compliance InspectionMishap/Accident InvestigationPublic Safety and SecurityRisk ManagementSafety and Health Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
