About the position: The position is located at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, in the Environmental Services Section. The Material Handler position will ensure proper Regulated Medical Waste handling (segregation, storage, disposal, supply pickups); Chemotherapy waste weekly pick-up; inspections for hospital-grade cleaning; responses to customer concerns. The work schedule is primarily between 7:00 A.M. and 3:30 P.M., with occasional work on other shifts to support 24-hour ops.

Duties

Ensure proper storage, pick up and handling of Regulated Medical Waste and Chemotherapy waste. Manage transportation and pick up of Regulated Medical Waste IAW with State and local Policy and procedures. Conduct hospital wide daily inspections for a major hospital cleaning contract covering over 1.24 Million square feet and 10 Outlying buildings. Enforce cleaning contract and waste removal contract compliance, including daily checks, monitoring, and on the spot corrections for over 160 contract employees. Assist management in support of the Environmental Services Hospital Mission. Physical requirements such as extended walking, standing, stooping, and lifting 50 pounds (scrap trash, carts, crates, etc.).

Requirements

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may require a suitability/fitness determination.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • The incumbent may be required to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
  • Employees assigned to this position may be designated as Mission Essential and assume Essential Personnel status during inclement weather/emergencies.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

Ensure that needed plans, blueprints, materials and tools are available; ensure that safety and housekeeping rules are followed; Insure that floors and corridors are free of contaminated and/or medical waste products; Note and report conditions requiring correction action involving the segregation, transporting, storage and disposal of Regulated Medical waste. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To InspectAbility to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc.Dexterity and SafetyKnowledge of MaterialsWork Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) PHYSICAL EFFORT: The incumbent may occasionally lift and move objects weighing over 50 pounds (scrap, trash, cars, crates, etc). Physical effort is exerted in walking to, between and thru buildings, on grounds of campus and in parking garages multi-levels. WORKING CONDITIONS: The incumbent works in both areas indoors and outdoors. The incumbent is continually exposed to dirt, dust, grease etc: and standing on hard surface floors.
