About the Position: Serves as Benefits Coordinator for the eligible beneficiaries under the supervision of the CAC supervisor and in close coordination with the Support Coordinator and Financial Counselor. Provide expertise on local, state, and federal benefits to all Survivors. Provides guidance and assistance to the Family with benefits, applications, and linkage with benefit providers.

Duties

Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates comprehensive, basic, and intermediate level services. Identifies and recommends program resource requirements. Serves as liaison with other agencies and coordinates efforts to provide and receive current information to clarify record, and to ensure accuracy of information provided to military personnel and their eligible beneficiaries. Benefits Coordinator reviews current federal and state laws to determine families benefits and entitlements due i.e., Service member's Life Group Insurance (SGLI), Death Gratuity (DG), and other benefits. Independently plans, organizes, directs, and administers a wide variety of distinct types of benefits and services available under Army, Federal and State programs. Coordinates with organizations such as the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) centers, the American Red Cross, or Army Emergency relief (AER) for assistance when needed.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) may be required up to 10%.
  • Performs 24-hour casualty assistance duties and must be immediately available to respond. Acts as an advocate for Army personnel and their Family members in dealing with organizations that affect their cases.
  • May be required to work weekends/holidays.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing information on employee benefits to include completing emergency contact data forms and/or life insurance election/beneficiary designation forms OR (2) assisting in coordinating matters relating to military casualty functions such as military honors requests or corresponding with survivors on military benefits. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D. [remove LL.B or J.D., if unrelated] in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
