This position is located in the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Office of Congressional and Public Affairs.
The purpose of this position is to serve as an agency spokesperson to effectively communicate the mission and activities of the Drug Enforcement Administration. This is accomplished by responding to inquiries and requests from broadcast, print, and online news media, and proactively seeking opportunities to maintain transparency with the American public.

As a Public Affairs Specialist, your typical work assignments may include:
Plans and manages public relations programs involving issues that are controversial or of significant public or Congressional interest, such as DEA programs involving narcotics and dangerous drugs, technology, drug trends and prevention.
Informs the public of the DEA's mission and accomplishments through proactive and reactive interactions with broadcast, print, and online news media outlets.
Develops policies and makes recommendations regarding the dissemination of information to correct misperceptions and enhance public understanding.
Writes policies and procedures governing information dissemination functions for several organizations.
Establishes reputation of credibility, trust, and reliability with media contacts to encourage receptivity to DEA messaging.
Requirements

Qualifications
Applicants must meet the Specialized Experience requirements as noted below. Qualification claims will be subject to verification.
Experience:You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level in the normal line of progress for the occupation in the organization which is a GS-13. To be creditable, this experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular qualifications to perform successfully the duties of the position, and must typically be in or related to the position to be filled.
Qualifying experience includes: 1) Providing consultation to managers on developing public affairs activities and materials for internal and external use; 2) Assisting with mass communication media in interpreting topics of interests; 3) Advises leaders on writing/speech styles to be used in public affairs products.
Specialized experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
