You will serve as a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist in the Production Department Safety Branch (Code 900S.1), Production Safety Manager (Code O900S), Production Resources Department Analysis & Business Manager (Code 900A), Production Resources Department Production Manager (Code 901), Production Resources Department (Code 900) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will conduct a variety of activities directed at identifying hazardous conditions, operation, procedures, and work practices, where the potential for injury, health impairment, and property or material damage exists in production work. You will provide oversight in a variety of production work areas and Safety Program functional areas, making recommendations for improvement. You will conduct scheduled and unscheduled inspections in buildings, dry docks, on ships, piers, and in various other facilities to identify, evaluate, and provide recommendations and guidance to employees, supervisors, and managers. You will provide mentoring assistance and direction to other production shop personnel to ensure prevention of injuries, using Operation Risk Management (ORM) and VPP concepts, is planned into production work. You will promote safety awareness through the engagement in production shop and project safety committee. You will use facilitation techniques at Shop Safety meetings to promote and encourage personal ownership of safety among employees, supervisors, and managers of all levels. You will instruct and advise all levels of workers and management in program requirements, establish and maintain liaison relationships to ensure effective and efficient coordination and compliance with established program requirements.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience conducting scheduled and unscheduled inspections in buildings, dry docks, on ships, piers, and in various other facilities to identify, evaluate, and provide recommendations, advice, and guidance to ensure abatement of unsafe or unhealthful conditions, procedures, and work practices. Experience providing mentoring assistance and direction to other production shop personnel to ensure prevention of injuries, using Operational Risk Management (ORM) and VPP concepts, is planned into production work. Experience promoting safety awareness through the engagement in production shop, and project safety committee. Experience instructing and advising all levels of workers and management in program requirements, establishes and maintains liaison with all stakeholders to ensure effective and efficient coordination and compliance with established program requirements. . Education

In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:

Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

or

3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree

in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene) or a degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study form among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.
