You will serve as a SAFETY & OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH SPECIALIST in the Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Office, Safety and Health Division, Safety Branch of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will evaluate and recommend significant hazard control techniques that will minimize or eliminate unsafe or unhealthy operations and conditions and to successfully implement OSHE Work Specifications. You will plan and develop facility and equipment design safety criteria, guidelines and directives. You will coordinate OSH promotional programs and training development and implementation. You will conduct independent accident investigations of all classes and categories of accidents to determine and analyze contributing factors and establish corrective measures.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience with applying knowledge of OSHA, ANSI and NFPA standards, DOT and EPA regulations and state and local laws. Experience with scheduling, coordinating and conducting safety briefings, safety training classes, and professional development classes for senior and junior leaders. Experience with planning and development of facility and equipment design safety criteria, guidelines and directives. Experience performing structural, electrical, mechanical and ergonomic safety design analysis on various machinery, systems, processes and facilities. Experience with evaluating and recommending significant hazard control techniques that will minimize or eliminate unsafe or unhealthy operations and conditions. Education

In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:

PH.D or equivalent doctoral degree

OR
3 full years of progressively higher level graduate level education leading to such a degree

OR
LL.M, if related
