You will serve as a FIREFIGHTER (BASIC LIFE SUPPORT) in the Fire & Emergency Services of MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON. Vacancies filled from this announcement may be filled at any grade level listed. If selected below the full performance level, you may be noncompetitively promoted to the next higher grade level after meeting all regulatory requirements, and upon the recommendation of management. Duties

You will monitor a patient's baseline vital signs (e.g., temperature, blood pressure, pulse) during a medical emergency. You will perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or automatic external defibrillation (AED) during respiratory and cardiac emergencies. You will respond to a scene of an emergency, and follow courses of action, as assigned. You will perform firefighting duties as a crew member on structural, aircraft, vehicle, wildland fire, hazardous materials incidents, transportation incidents, ordnance responses and nuclear/radiation emergencies. You will analyze the environment (e.g., relationship between fuels, topography, wind, humidity) in the fire environment to ensure use of the correct firefighting apparatus. You will drive a firefighting vehicle (e.g., pumper, aerial ladder truck, rescue truck, brush truck, quick-attack vehicle) to the scene of a fire. You will establish on-scene control procedures (e.g., zone control, decontamination) in a hazardous material incident.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

  • Must successfully complete the Emergency Vehicle Operator's Course within sixty (60) days of appointment.
  • Must be certified at the appropriate firefighter certification levels as outlined in the DoDI 6055.06M, Department of Defense (DoD0 Fire and Emergency Services Training and Certification Program.
  • Must possess a Valid State Driver's license and must be able to obtain a valid State of California Department of Motor Vehicles Firefighter Endorsement within 90 days of employment.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or pass the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
  • Selectee is required to take annual firefighter physicals via the Occupational Health Dept following National Fire Protection Association Standards (NFPA) 1582 standards.
  • Must possess a valid State of California EMT certification or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician EMT certification prior to employment and possession of a valid County of San Diego accreditation within 90 days of employment.
  • Must possess a Firefighter I and II, HazMat Awareness, HazMat Operations, and HazMat Technician (within 1 year of employment).

Qualifications

GS-06 Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Performing fire prevention, fire protection, and emergency operations (e.g. structural, vehicle, aircraft firefighting etc, emergency medical service, etc). GS-05 Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Operating/driving the specialized firefighting equipment of one or more types of firefighting vehicles (e.g. pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, rescue/brush/ trucks, aircraft firefighting/rescue apparatus, etc) Additional qualification information can be found from the following Office of Personnel Management website: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-standards/0000/fire-protection-and-prevention-series-0081/ Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
