This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), United States Coast Guard (USCG), Director, Governmental & Public Affairs, Office of External Outreach and Heritage, Community Relations Branch, Washington, DC.

Duties

You will serve as Publica Affairs Specialist and assist in planning, coordinating, and supervising national Coast Guard (CG) community relations programs to inform the general public and to help create a clearer public understanding of Coast Guard objectives, missions, and accomplishments; liaising with stakeholder groups and national organizations, disseminating information and materials to these organizations throughout the country; furnishing speakers, exhibits, equipment, bands, ceremonial units and other special services from the CG; and planning and coordinating events and ceremonies. Being a CG civilian makes you a valuable member of the CG team. Proactively identifies noteworthy missions, milestones, and achievements of the CG as a whole or of individual units or members and seeks opportunities to tell the CG story. Serving as liaison to other federal, state, and local organizations to administer and formalize events that might involve congressional leaders, agency officials and other high-level industry, federal, and community leaders. Coordinating, with other members of the Governmental and Public Affairs team to maximize impact through media engagement and development of messages and materials that support broad communication themes and priorities of the Commandant and the CG. Serving as backup and provides general support to the CG Art Program manager in administering the Service's art collection. Researching and preparing various written materials, including public inquiries and requests for information on CG activities and missions; online content for Coast Guard and community relations websites, fact sheets on CG missions and activities, and other outreach materials.

Qualifications

To qualify for the GS-12: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal sector. Specialized experience must include: Drafts press releases, social media posts, and/or presentations for internal/external dissemination; AND Collaborates on designs/implements proactive public outreach regarding initiatives and programs; AND Coordinates public awareness campaigns in order to gather information; AND Provides recommendations or revisions to communication tools such as web page content; AND Liaising with members of the media and trusted organizations to maintain effective working relationships and share information. National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. The Office of Personnel management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule, C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
