About the Position: The installation rests in the beautiful 'hill and lake' country of Central Texas between Killeen and Copperas Cove and is approximately 60 miles north of the capital city of Austin, 50 miles south of Waco, 160 miles south of Dallas, and 150 miles north of San Antonio.

Duties

Responsible for identifying, coordinating and obtaining a variety of resources and services for Army Family members who have physical, developmental, emotional or intellectual handicaps. Maintains accurate information on family members with special needs in the community that are enrolled in the program. Coordinates the provision of recreational and cultural programs for handicapped family members which may include sports, summer camp, arts and crafts, music and dance therapy. Identifies existing resources in the civilian community that may offer similar programs and arranges for participation of special needs Family members. Assists in maintaining a comprehensive listing of military and civilian special education and health-related services. Establishes and maintains a respite care program for handicapped family members where such services are not available through existing military and civilian activities. Meets with parents, who are providing regular care for their special needs family member, to determine specific respite care needs, frequency of service and the level of care necessary. Provides and coordinates ACS services to a designated military unit and serves as the initial point of contact for all ACS programs.

  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.

Basic Requirement for Exceptional Family Member Program Specialist: Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in behavioral or social science, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, such as social work, psychology, counseling or sociology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. OR Experience: Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes working in a community service or family support program assisting clients requiring social service assistance; providing information and referral to address client's special needs; and/or promoting availability of family support program services. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: social work, psychology, counseling or sociology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
