This position is located at the Kayenta Service Unit, Kayenta Health Center, Division of Clinical Services, Surgery Branch, Kayenta, Arizona. The primary purpose of this position is to perform receptionist, record keeping, retrieving patient data from automated systems, and provide support work to medical staff. The incumbent maybe assigned for varying periods of time into one or more types of responsibilities within medical support assistance work where the individual's skills are required.
Duties
-Clerical duties associated with patient care and treatment in one of several clinics responsible for a variety of medical services
-Receptionist duties such as receives patients, visitors, telephone calls; refers calls to appropriate staff; escorts patients into treatment areas, as needed; refers emergencies and walk-ins for treatment; answers routine medical, personnel, and administrative inquiries; and confirms eligibility; maintains patient logs
-Serve as a Patient Registration Clerk and performs a variety of clerical duties associated determining patient eligibility for billing services
-Knowledge of alternate resources and their respective eligibility requirements to ensure that all necessary information is obtained from the patient and is properly documented/entered into the system.
-Assigned to record keeping duties and maintain administrative reports
-Prior to examination or treatment in the clinic, identify those patients whose health benefits coverage require prior approval and determine the extent of their health care coverage; search in the patients' health records and in the automated patient registration system to obtain and verify eligibility
-Skilled in interviewing others to obtain personal and sometimes sensitive information without causing resistance or giving offense
-Ability to operating computer, word processor, and microcomputer in order to type medical summaries, progress reports, and consultations containing specialized medical terminology in a timely fashion
Qualifications

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-05: One (1) year of Specialized Experience equivalent to a GS-04 grade level OR four (4) years of education above high school.
Specialized Experience - Make and cancel appointments using automated system, call patients to notify them of appointments, assists with processing referrals, case management, filing, record keeping, and other patient care support functions. Schedules consultations and referral appointments with various clinics and services throughout the medical facility and outside facilities. Conducts many functions by electronic means using automated systems. Answer the phone, take messages, receive patients and direct patients to the proper location for needed services. Provides list of patient appointments for providers and provide administrative support to the unit and assists the unit with implementation of IHS initiatives. Serves as a Patient Registration Clerk and perform a variety of clerical duties associated determining patient eligibility for billing services. Knowledge of alternate resources and their respective eligibility requirements to ensure that all necessary information is obtained from the patient and is properly documented/entered into the system.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
