Duties
You will serve as a HEALTH PHYSICIST in the HEALTH PHYSICS BRANCH (CODE 105.52) of the RADIOLOGICAL CONTROL OFFICE located in KITTERY, ME.
You will design, develop, implement and maintain complex dosimetry processing instrumentation and associated software and procedures for various types of routine and unusual dosimetry occurrences.
You will investigate, resolve, document, and review circumstances surrounding unusual dosimetry occurrences.
You will provide troubleshooting and technical assistance for the Automated Radiological Controls Management Information System (ARCMIS) at the Shipyard and satellite locations.
You will provide training and mentoring of standard issuing operations of radiation dosimetry devices by Shipyard personnel to employees and visitors in accordance with written Shipyard instructions.

- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
Qualifications
GS-07: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience applying knowledge and understanding of the theory, principles, and practices of Health Physics.
Experience identifying sources of radiation and radioactivity that might be encountered in the Shipyard (e.g., radiography, calibration sources, etc.).
Experience understanding how to use computer software, prepare reports, conduct analyses, and ensure environmental compliance.
Experience applying a basic knowledge and understanding of reactor, plant, and nuclear ship design and operating characteristics.
GS-05: Applicants who meet the Basic Requirements for this position are fully qualified for the GS-05 grade level.
Successful completion of a bachelor's degree in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.
OR
Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described above.
When combining education, qualifying experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience applying a basic knowledge and understanding of the theory, principles, and practices of Health Physics.
Experience identifying sources of radiation and radioactivity that might be encountered in the Shipyard (e.g., radiography, calibration sources, etc.).
Experience understanding how to use use computer software, prepare reports, conduct analyses, and ensure environmental compliance.
Experience applying a basic knowledge and understanding of reactor, plant, and nuclear ship design and operating characteristics.

Education
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
(A) Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.
OR
(B) Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.

GS-07:
Successful completion of 1 year of graduate-level education
OR
Superior academic achievement
