Duties
You will serve as a Health Physicist in the Health Physics Branch in the Radiation Health Division, Radiological Control Office, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
You will perform and manage projects in areas such as drafting reports and writing/rewriting procedures, analyzing and reporting on new techniques, developing and conducting testing/evaluation programs, formulating/coordinating actions, etc.
You will assist in assuring all Shipyard work is performed in compliance with NRC requirements and standards governing the use of NRC licensed radioactive materials.
You will evaluate through trend analysis of audit and survey results, the effectiveness of radiation protection standards and recommend, in the final for for implementation, changes when justified by evaluation.
You will serve as an instructor in radiation protection courses by RASO and a Division training coordinator for the professional staff.

- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience applying a professional knowledge of nuclear engineering/health physics concepts, principles, practices, and administrative techniques, applicable to planning and carrying out an assigned radiation health program which is one of several programs that make up the total program responsibility of the Division.
Experience applying knowledge of the effects of the nuclear environment upon equipment, systems materials, and personnel.
Experience recognizing radiation health factors associated with complex work operations, to ascertain their effects on the health and well-being of workers, and to developing criteria for radiation health standards for a variety of potentially hazardous conditions.
Experience using quantitative measurement and engineering techniques for evaluating the magnitude of radiation health conditions and concerns involving the physiological and biological effects of radioactivity on the health and well-being of workers, and the methods of precluding adverse effects.
Experience using the full range of engineering and health physics sampling techniques and instrumentation, and skill in writing comprehensive technical/scientific/engineering reports.

Education
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
(A) Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.
OR
(B) Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.
