About the Position: This position is to serve as a Medical Support Assistant, to carry out a variety of administrative and clerical duties related to patient care and treatment for Naval Hospital Jacksonville, Ambulatory Procedure Unit. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation utilizing the DHA for Domestic Defense Industrial Base (DIB) & Major Range and Test Facilities Base (MRTFB) in Department of Defense (DoD) to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Duties

Provides appropriate administrative directions and instructions for successful preoperative and postoperative encounters. Provides information per policies and procedures of the facility and specific unit. Compiles medical records for upcoming surgical procedures. Assures required forms are complete, signed by the providers and in compliance with all applicable standards. Transfer new orders for patient activities and tests to appropriate forms and enters into automated systems, routing orders and patients to the appropriate departments for action. Records telephone messages pertaining to detailed laboratory results, x-rays and test results, recognizes and refers urgent ones to the professional staff for immediate action. Assembles records in correct sequential and chronological order, assures required forms are completed and signed by professional staff. Verifies and assures that records of patient treatments are complete, accurate and properly assembled before forwarding to Medical Archives. Oversees clerical and administrative supplies and forms required for the unit and prepares request for reordering of supplies. Enters physician and nursing orders utilizing automated systems.

Requirements

  • One year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal Influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal Influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • This position requires the incumbent to have Tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A favorable Tier 3 background investigation is required for all Non-Critical Sensitive (NCS) positions with access to network systems and Personally Identifiable Information (PII).

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience and/or education requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience performing most of the following which includes: using Microsoft Office within a medical office environment; operating computerized programs and systems like MHS GENESIS to input, alter, and extract sensitive medical data and patient personally identifiable information (PII) from electronic health records, scheduling systems, and also creating reports; interacting with patients courteously to provide instructions and arrange medical appointments; collaborating, communicating, prioritizing, and organizing tasks to meet deadlines in accordance with established procedures, policies, and regulations; employing basic medical terminology to document patient communications and physician requests for follow-up care; handling phone calls and visitors at a medical clinic; managing appointment scheduling for an operating room, including making, changing, and canceling appointments; reviewing patient records to verify necessary information such as demographics and insurance details; consulting with clinic staff on physician scheduling and administrative orders; and independently carrying out a broad range of duties related to patient support. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
