Published at: Aug 19 2024
Employment Type: Full-time
NIST works with industry and science to advance innovation and improve quality of life. We're looking for a Physical Scientist to join our team!
This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.
Duties
The Nanoscale Device Characterization Division (NDCD) transforms nano- and atom-scale technologies by advancing measurement science and fundamental knowledge. The Division's mission is to develop and advance the measurement and knowledge infrastructure to characterize nano- and atom-scale engineered materials and solid-state devices for innovation in information processing, sensing, and future quantum technologies.
As the new Physical Scientist on our team you will:
Collaboratively develop and perform extreme-ultraviolet measurements of nanoscale periodic features for potential implementation in semiconductor manufacturing.
Leverage computer-aided design to establish new experimental instrumentation within a high vacuum chamber.
Implement and conduct repeatable, computerized data acquisition at these wavelengths.
Research and develop metrology to enable the non-destructive assessment during fabrication of transistor dimensions using extreme-ultraviolet light.
Assess experimental performance and identify obstacles to proposed approaches; cooperatively develop approaches to overcome such problems to deliver timely results.
Work with industry partners to disseminate novel experimental solutions for assessment of nanopatterned geometries after lithography.
Requirements
- U.S. citizenship
- Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service

Qualifications
Individual Occupational Requirements
Basic Requirements:
1. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
2. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must also have 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 (ZP-II at NIST) level. Specialized Experience is defined as:
Experience with data acquisition programs (e.g., python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, etc.)
AND experience with computer-aided design software (e.g., Autodesk, Solidworks, AutoCAD, FreeCAD, etc.)
OR
Master's or equivalent graduate degree as defined in the basic requirements.
OR
A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as defined in the additional requirements.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
The qualification requirements in this vacancy announcement are based on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook.
