You will serve as a SAFETY & OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH SPECIALIST in the SAFETY & HEALTH OFFICE of TRIDENT REFIT FACILITY, BANGOR. This announcement is for an Upward Mobility Program position.

Duties

You will perform the following duties under close guidance and supervision: You will perform scheduled and unscheduled inspections and gas free monitoring in buildings, piers, dry docks, ships, offices, warehouses and various other facilities. You will make recommendations to ensure abatement of unsafe and unhealthful procedures, conditions, and work practices. You will prepare and revise safety and health instructions to control or eliminate hazardous operating procedures, processes or environmental conditions. You will perform mishap investigations and prepare final reports of findings. You will investigate employee reports of unsafe and unhealthful conditions and ensure corrective action is taken as warranted. You will provide technical safety training for new employees.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • Performance of duties require regular and recurrent physical exertion such as walking, standing, bending, climbing of stairs and ladders, crouching, reaching, stretching and lifting of moderately weighted items.

Qualifications

The Upward Mobility Program is a unique job opportunity. This program is designed to provide Department of Navy employees career growth opportunities who have potential but do not presently meet the Office of Personnel Management qualification requirements for this position. The entry level for this position is GS 07 with a full performance level of GS 11. Knowledge of employees selected may vary and will require the development of an individually tailored training plan to assist them in qualifying for the full performance level of this position. Eligibility requires that the employee be performing satisfactorily, complete all training requirements, acquire the requisite qualifications and have met time-in-grade eligibility for career ladder promotions. This recruitment is open to current UIC 68438 employees with experience at the GS 07 or WG 06 grade level or higher. Employee Participation Requirements Must be a current permanent employee serving under a competitive appointment, or on a time-limited or excepted appointment that provides for noncompetitive conversion to a permanent appointment (e.g., VRA, Schedule A Individuals with Disabilities).
