You will serve as an INTERDISCIPLINARY PHYSICAL SCIENTIST / OCEANOGRAPHER in the SUBMARINE NAVIGATION BRANCH, SUBMARINE PRODUCTS DIVISION, HYDROGRAPHIC DEPARTMENT, NAVAL OCEANOGRAPHIC OFFICE of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS.
Duties
You will provide assistance to the branch head to plan the annual production schedule to be accomplished by project teams.
You will implement quality assurance procedures to control and certify the accuracy and validity of bathymetric/hydrographic data.
You will provide scientific and technical advice guidance, and coordination regarding various projects underway within the Branch.
You will resolve technical difficulties requiring professional scientific judgement.
You will perform duties aboard survey ships or other platforms.
You will operate various sonar and navigation equipment and perform preliminary data reduction and processing procedures.
You will act as the Senior NAVOCEANO Representative.

- You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
- Field duty required moderate physical exertion, and the incumbent must be physically fit for sea duty.
Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following.
Experience developing and generating bathymetric/hydrographic models for data base populations and the production of Safety of Navigation (SoN) data packages in support of navigation products.
Experience applying and utilizing acoustic, geophysical, and oceanographic concepts to assist in the development, maintenance, and improvement of acoustic and geophysical databases.
Experience resolving unique problems involved in the collection, storage, and retrieval of digital and analog data, and the analysis of acoustic, geophysical, and oceanographic data collected on various survey platforms.
Experience developing and utilizing new methods and techniques regarding mathematics, statistics, and the navigation of validating data before inclusion in acoustic or geophysical databases.
Experience developing, utilizing, and maintaining computer hardware, of data base administrations, of existing software and its effective use, and of programming languages used in scientific applications. Experience planning, organizing, and directing work of other subordinates, oceanographers, and technicians.

Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences.

Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Applicants who qualify on the basis of major study in biology or geology must have had at least 6 semester hours in the major directly concerned with marine science or 6 semester hours in oceanography; applicants who qualify on the basis of other physical sciences or engineering must have had differential and integral calculus and at least 6 semester hours in physics.
