You will serve as a INTERDISCIPLINARY in the SPECIAL PROJECTS BRANCH of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS. This announcement uses the Certain Personnel of the DoD direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Duties

You will plan, execute, compile, and complete the development of gridded geophysical and oceanographic databases in assigned areas, which require interdisciplinary input. You will develop methodologies for digitizing seismic, acoustic, and oceanographic data, and ingest the data into a GIS for the generation of maps and products. You will perform field duties aboard designated survey platforms, when assigned. You will communicate with management both orally and in writing on status of both progress and problem areas of on-going projects, and report actions that occur which hamper or delay work schedules.

Requirements

  • MSP/PPP applicants must currently hold the required security clearance.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. Passport.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying extensive knowledge of all phases of geophysics. Must have an understanding for the unique problems involved in the collection, storage, retrieval of digital data and the analysis and interpretation of geophysical, acoustic, and oceanographic data collected on various survey platforms. Experience applying knowledge in the science of gravity magnetics, bathymetry, and geology to correctly interpret and resolve erroneous or conflicting data. Experience applying a working knowledge of mathematics and statistics to develop new methods and techniques, and to determine the validity of geophysical and oceanographic data and probable areas of investigations. Experience applying a working knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of available computer hardware, data base administration, existing software and its effective utilization, and scientific programming necessary. Experience applying knowledge in the science of navigating errors which are the most serious limitation to the accuracy of geophysical measurements made on moving platforms. Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess.

GENERAL PHYSICAL SCIENTIST SERIES 1301
Basic Requirements:
  • (A) Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
  • (B) Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
GEOPHYSICS SERIES 1313
Basic Requirements:
  • (A) Degree: that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.).
OR
  • (B) Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
OCEANOGRAPHY SERIES 1360
Basic Requirements:
  • (A) Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences.
OR
  • (B) Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Applicants who qualify on the basis of major study in biology or geology must have had at least 6 semester hours in the major directly concerned with marine science or 6 semester hours in oceanography; applicants who qualify on the basis of other physical sciences or engineering must have had differential and integral calculus and at least 6 semester hours in physics.

MATHEMATICS SERIES 1520
Basic Requirements:
  • (A) Degree: mathematics; or the equivalent of a major that included at least 24 semester hours in mathematics.
OR
  • (B) Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in mathematics (including at least 24 semester hours in mathematics), as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
The total course work in either A or B above must have included differential and integral calculus and, in addition, four advanced mathematics courses requiring calculus or equivalent mathematics courses as a prerequisite.
