This position is located at the Fort Sams Houston (Food Analysis Diagnostic Laboratory) Veterinary Treatment Facility.

Duties
Serves as an Operations Assistant (Laboratory) for GVMP under DoD Food Analysis and Diagnostic Laboratory. Incumbent performs duties primarily related to specimen receipt, electronic logging, shipping and online reporting.
The incumbent will additionally be a customer service representative who is responsible for answering phones and handling customer calls.
The incumbent will also serve as lab ordering official and Government Purchase Card holder performing tasks related to medical supply inventory audits, ordering, receiving, inspecting, record keeping and vendor coordination.
Processes animal sample packages to include unpacking, date tracking and documentation review for technical accuracy and completeness.
Exercises care in handling, processing and shipping of samples due to the nature of samples and risk of infection.
For misrouted samples or samples that must be sent to an outside laboratory, determines appropriate sample packing and preservative materials required to maintain integrity samples during shipment.
Monitors and replenishes inventory. Processes purchasing documents and periodically prepare and submit reconciliation reports. Verifies receipt of payment for specimen processing.
Maintains all documentation as required by Army and local regulations.
Determine sample test requirements, ensure proper tube designation for a wide variety of laboratory specimens for in-house analysis and/or shipment.
Inspects analysis request form to ensure that information complete and accurate. Verifies samples are collected in proper tubes and labeled accordingly. Appropriately identifies samples to ensure proper placement and determines urgency of processing.
Receives and reviews results for completeness and enters into Remote On-Line Veterinary Records System (ROVR).
Immediately informs supervisor of critical results or problems identified. Sends results to remote clinics, DOD entities, and state and federal government via mail service, FedEx, or fax. Retrieves test results from storage upon request.
Receives and handles customer service calls and email inquiries from requesting agencies and pet owners.
Contacts referring veterinarians for additional required information and/or patient history to ensure proper test result data is obtained. Enters all received samples into the electronic laboratory information management system.
Scans/uploads results into ERHS. Uses variety of software programs and/or an electric typewriter to prepare material involving technical and legal terminology of the unit, requiring accuracy in spelling, grammar, and syllabication.
Types required number of copies based on standard operating procedures, distributes according to content.
Types material in final form; proofreads and screens for all required enclosures before releasing to responsible person for coordination and signature.
Processes and verifies payment transactions and prepares for deposit. Performs daily financial activity reports on a daily basis as required to complete the bank deposit.
Establishes and maintains office files in accordance with regulatory guidelines and procedures as dictated by unit SOP and standards of the laboratory accrediting agencies. Compiles and provides end of month financial statistics as required.
Requirements

- A one year probationary period may be required.
- Ability to work occasional Saturdays for special events.
- Must be able to receive all mandated immunizations to work in a direct-patient capacity and/or veterinary environment.
- Must not have an aversion to animals, blood, bodily fluids, animal tissues, strong odors, needles, or sharp instruments.
- Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability determination.
- A successful background investigation submission to the Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency (DCSA) must be met no later than 30 calendar days after entry on duty or placement in the position for internal candidates.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Progressive work experience which demonstrates the knowledge and skills required to perform the duties of the position.
Basic computer skills to include proficiency in Microsoft Suite or equivalent.
Experience in using a point of sales software.
Basic arithmetic expertise to balance cash draw, accept payments and provide change accurately.
Typing proficiency - 40WPM.
Highly Preferred Criteria:
Clerical experience in a Veterinary Clinic or equivalent or working in an outpatient medical facility/operations as clerical-administrative support.
Ability to lift 40 lbs and long periods of standing, restraining, kneeling, reaching and sitting, etc
