About the Position: This position is located at the Center for the Intrepid, at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio Texas. A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized. Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service.

Duties

Design, fabricate, alter, fit, and repair all types of upper extremity prostheses and orthoses for a broad range of patient conditions. Provide consultation to all prosthetists in the Armed Forces Amputee Care Program on the unique requirements of upper extremity prostheses, myoelectric components, partial hand restoration, and individual digit prosthetic replacement. Teach other prosthetists and technicians the fundamentals of the design, fitting and fabrication of devices using traditional teaching strategies, presentations, and mentoring. Provide complete service to the amputee patient including pre- and post-operative counseling, evaluation, immediate post surgical fittings. Develop, adapt, and implement new hardware and software applications to incorporate new technologies, such as prosthetic software architecture. Participate in both the day-to-day operations as well as long-range planning for the Prosthetic Section, including the development of budget estimates to meet planned program needs, and determination of staffing needs. Examine and consult with patients regarding physical difficulties and/or lifestyle problems encountered to make recommendations to clinical staff on components available to remedy problems. Contribute to research projects and experimentation relating to prosthetics, including biomedical software/hardware engineering and design, components, and new materials.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to 25 pounds is required.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • Must possess and maintain certification as a Prosthetist and Orthotist.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: In order to qualify, your resume must demonstrate that you possess at least one year of specialized experience which includes fabricating upper extremity prostheses, programming microprocessor controlled prosthetic devices, providing services to amputee patients, and consulting with physicians and other professional staff. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-13). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
