You will serve as a PHYSICAL SCIENTIST, OCEANOGRAPHER, OR GEOPHYSICIST in the in the Maritime Homeland Defense Support Division, Mine Warfare Department of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS.
Duties
You will lead in the development and maintenance of Mine Warfare (MIW) environmental databases pertaining to ports and harbors in support of homeland defense.
You will receive, processes, and performs image generation, mosaicing, bottom contact and roughness analysis of sonar imagery data collected aboard NAVOCEANO ships and MIW Fleet assets, and from outside sources.
You will investigate and implements new techniques for automated data analysis of geophysical data sets and expertly utilizes Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to perform geophysical data processing.
Youn will perform field duty aboard NAVOCEANO survey platforms, aircraft, or at remote shore locations as required, and serves as a trained senior member of survey teams.
You will be responsible for collection, processing, analysis and quality control of various acoustic and related geophysical data.
You will resolve most conflicts which arise, coordinates the work with others as necessary, and interprets policy on own initiative in terms of established objectives.
Requirements
- This position is eligible for part time, substantial or ad-hoc telework at the discretion of management.
- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
- This is a bargaining unit position.

- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
Qualifications
GS-12 In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience and professional knowledge in ancillary fields such as bathymetry, geology, and navigation to interpret and resolve erroneous or conflicting data.
Experience applying exercises in wide latitude and independent judgment to develop new methods and techniques for analyzing and databasing marine environmental data.
Experience in work planning and adeptness in analyzing and interpreting vast datasets.

Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
or
Geophysics Series, 1313
Degree: that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.).
or
Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
or
Oceanography Series, 1360
Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences
