You will serve as a PHYSICAL SCIENTIST in the SSBN Support Branch, Submarine Products Division, Hydrographic Department of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS.
Duties
You will be responsible for analyzing navigation or bathymetric automated system performances to determine data quality.
You will be responsible for processing hydrographic or bathymetric and navigational data using knowledge of scientific applications.
You will be responsible for delivering instruction and trainings in the use of various data processing software and equipment.
You will be responsible for supplying technical guidance and training to junior employees to increase their knowledge, skills, and abilities.
You will be responsible for performing data collection, processing, and formatting of data for product development and data transfer.
You will be responsible for use the principles, theories, practices, and techniques of the physical sciences for data collection, analysis, and production of results.
You will be responsible for analyzing and evaluating the use of NAVOCEANO products by units of the fleet.
You will be responsible for the preparation, revision, and dissemination of various publications pertaining to bathymetric navigation.
You will be responsible for selecting and evaluating areas of the ocean bottom which exhibit the potential characteristics for navigation by bathymetric means.

- This is a bargaining unit position.
- Position requires eligibility for access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI), or other intelligence-related Special Sensitive information, or involvement in Top Secret Special Access Programs (SAP).
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience creating, managing, and employing complex geographic information system (GIS) geodatabases to select, produce, and maintain Precise Bathymetric Navigation Zone Charts (PBNZC) and/or other precise navigation products for dissemination to the fleet.
Experience researching bathymetric navigation data to prepare reports to solve general problems concerned with Fleet use of NAVOCEANO bathymetric products; offering recommendations to improve fleet bathymetric navigation; and provides recommended
modifications to NAVOCEANO products to improve fleet performance.
Experience performing studies and conducting tests and evaluations of new survey methods, instruments, and systems. This includes the application of mathematical techniques involving computer systems to all types of survey data.
Experience leading and mentoring a person or team of junior scientist(s) within the branch. Acting as consultant (or in an advisory capacity) occasionally conducting training classes for DoD and private industry personnel concerned with the use of NAVOCEANO special navigation charts and publications. Assists in training new Division personnel to ensure they are capable of performing assigned tasks.
Experience providing technical expertise to branch scientists and personnel of the Department of Defense (DoD) or other
agencies.

Education
Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:
Applicants must possess a successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics. Your related degree must also possess 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
