These positions are located in the Office of Hearings Operations (OHO), OHO Headquarters and OHO offices nationwide. THIS IS A VIRTUAL TEMPORARY ASSIGNMENT. SELECTED INDIVIDUALS WILL REMAIN IN THEIR PERMANENT DUTY STATION AND CONTINUE TO RECEIVE THE LOCALITY PAY FOR THAT AREA. The position description number for this position is PD6D121. Duties

COMPASS Development Program participants will participate in developmental assignments designed to provide substantive experience for higher levels of responsibility in mission-critical workloads. Receives incoming correspondence, reviews material, establishes controls, and distributes for necessary action or response. Follows-up with appropriate staff members to ensure deadlines are met. Reviews outgoing correspondence prior to release for grammar, spelling, typographical errors, conformance to formats, and procedural requirements and corrects as appropriate. Receives telephone calls, ascertains the nature of the inquiry, and personally responds to routine inquiries. For more complex, technical inquiries outside area of expertise, refers callers to appropriate staff. Performs a variety of assistance and technical support activities that involve the timely processing of SSA workloads. Interviews beneficiaries, claimants, representatives, or other inquiries to determine the nature of their problem or interest and provides information and assistance, explaining technical provisions, as necessary. Provides administrative support for day-to-day activities related to budget, material resources, staffing, or training matters. As directed, monitors workloads, coordinates work activities of others, and/or gathers and compiles data and information and prepares one-of-a-kind, special, or recurring reports.

Qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Ensures that actions meet public needs and interests. Other qualifications: Applicants must hold a permanent position at the GS-7 grade level for 52 weeks as of the closing date of this announcement. Participation in the program is a temporary promotion. At the conclusion of the program, you will resume your prior pay scale. Applicants in career ladder positions must have one year of service at the journeyman position as of the closing date of this announcement. Applicants must be in good standing and have a current performance rating of record of Successful or higher. Applicants must not be serving under a formal Performance Assistance Plan or an Opportunity to Perform Successfully Plan. Applicants currently working a part-time schedule must convert to a full-time schedule during the course of the program. DUTIES IF SELECTED: Developmental Activities Individuals selected for the COMPASS Program must complete a variety of activities that focus on the development of their skills in the four core competencies: Continual Learning, Interpersonal Skills, Oral and Written Communication, and Public Service Motivation. Developmental activities will be completed in the form of a "virtual detail" in which the employee remains in his/her permanent duty station. Mentor Selection Participants must partner with a mentor. The mentor will assist in the development of the IDP and provide general guidance and advice throughout the program. Program selectees will be assigned a mentor at the beginning of the program. Individual Development Plan (IDP)Participants must complete an IDP that focuses on the development of the four core competencies. The IDP will identify developmental activities that reflect SSA's organizational goals and the candidate's individual development needs. Developmental Assignments Participants must complete two, six-month developmental assignments during the program. The assignments must be consecutive and encompass the candidate's 12-month program. Assignments will be six months in length. All assignments must concentrate on developing employee's technical knowledge and core competencies Assignments may be at the next higher grade level. Training Participants must attend the COMPASS Program Orientation and all Core training programs. Orientation and training will be held virtually. Participants must complete two SSA Learning Management System (LMS) courses. Other Learning Activities Participants will read and complete a written review of at least two books that focus on the participant's skills or business tools competencies. Participants will participate in a quarterly teleconference to promote networking and understanding of program issues. Participants will create a statement of learning (no more than two pages) at the end of each detail assignment, analyzing their learning and development related to one or more of the core program competencies. Participants will participate in virtual Action Learning Groups, in which they are assigned an issue for analysis and action planning. Each group will be mentored by one or more OHO managers. Participants will complete and submit all required program documents Paralegal Specialist Track If selected as a candidate for the program, and you indicated interest in participating in the 1-year Paralegal Specialist track on the assessment, participating in the Paralegal Specialist track will mean undertaking a 1-year assignment rather than two different 6-month developmental assignments.
