About the Position: The position is located with the Directorate of Emergency Services, Police/Provost Marshall Division, Canine Branch, on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

Duties

Perform law enforcement work to maintain law and order, preserve the peace, protect life and civil rights, detect and investigate crimes. Perform patrols within the jurisdiction of the military installation as a Military Working Dog (MWD) Handler. Arrest or apprehend violators. Conducts preliminary investigations utilizing a Military Working Dog to search out illegal narcotics, explosive devices. Apprehend and take into custody suspected violators associated with any crime that may have been committed. Performs advanced on/off leash obedience, controlled aggression, safely utilizes MWD in congested areas. Enforces the laws of the United States, the Uniform Code of Military Justice and applicable local regulations involving persons and property. Provides response to interpreted messages, (e.g., broadcasts Attempt to Locate/Be on the lookout to patrols, types of response to sending agency, briefs appropriate person as to content of message, etc.)

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able obtain and maintain a valid Tier 3 (Secret) security investigation.
  • Official Temporary Duty (TDY) up to 10% of the time may be required.
  • Successfully graduated from the United States Army Civilian Police Academy, unless incumbent has a current approved waiver/exemption or grandfathered from the Office of the Provost Marshal General.
  • Successfully graduated from the Department of Defense, Military Working Dog Handler Course or complete within one year of hire date.
  • Must be able to successfully pass training, certification and qualification requirements related to LE and MWD work functions as prescribed by policy, regulations or statutes.
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment and recurring medical evaluation. Pass a Physical Agility Test (PAT) within 30 days of hire date and annually thereafter.
  • Comply with requirements and maintain certification under the Individual Reliability Program (IRP).
  • This is a Drug Testing Designated Position.
  • The 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968 covers this position. Persons convicted of a misdemeanor or felony crime of domestic violence are not eligible for this position.
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license and be able to obtain and maintain a government motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • Incumbent is subject to possible civil action due to improper exercises of authority or injudicious use of force in the apprehension or detention of individuals.
  • Designated Mission Essential Position.

Must have knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
