About the Position: This position is located with the Directorate of Emergency Services, Police/Provost Marshall Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.
Duties
Performs a wide range of managerial tasks in planning, managing, directing and evaluating law enforcement operations with authority to make decisions and commit to a course of action.
Through subordinate supervisors, directs the activities of civilian and military law enforcement and support personnel to include monitoring progress of Position Description major projects.
Identifies problem areas and makes necessary changes in policies and procedures to correct deficiencies and to meet short and long range objectives.
Establishes objectives for various operating elements of the Law Enforcement Division and assigns responsibilities to subordinates.
As the Deputy Chief, Law Enforcement Division, the incumbent develops law enforcement programs and operating plans for the JBLM community.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Operates a government motor vehicle in the performance of assigned duties (valid state operator's license required)
- This position is covered by the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968.
- Incumbent must pass a pre-appointment physical and annual physicals thereafter.
- Incumbent may, as appropriate, be required to wear the prescribed uniform.
- Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment in case of hazardous/chemical incident (respirators, safety glasses, etc.).
- Must be able to maintain qualification for the Individual Reliability Program
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET clearance.
- May require working scheduled and unscheduled overtime
- Incumbent must pass the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center Mixed Basic Police training program, other state or locally accredited police officer training program, or military services certified academy, prior to assignment
- This is a mission essential position.
- Position requires skill in the use of authorized firearms. Incumbent must successfully complete semi-annual qualification on his or her assigned weapon.
- This is a Drug Tested Position.
- One year Supervisory probationary period may be required.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes Planning, directing, and reviewing the activities of police officers; Assigning work to subordinate police officers; Observing and evaluating the work performance of police officers; Participating in investigations; And knowledge of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
