About the Position: This position is located at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. Huntsville is a high-tech city nestled between the edge of the Appalachian Mountains in North Alabama and the Tennessee River. This position will be filled at the GS-07 level only. If selected at the GS-07 level, noncompetitive promotion to the full performance level is authorized.

Duties

Inform supervisors and safety representatives of the appropriate safety and occupational health measures necessary to control or eliminate hazardous operating processes. Conduct investigations of incidents and material damage and personnel injury accidents operations, facilities, machinery and equipment. Assist with conducting surveys and inspections of areas, buildings, structures, and mechanical processes. Prepare responses to employee complaints, grievances, and suggestions dealing with safety and/or occupational health factors.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.
  • Incumbent may be required 10% TDY travel.
  • Incumbent may be required to lift up to 45 lbs.
  • Incumbent may be required to spend considerable time standing, walking, climbing, bending and crouching.

Specialized Experience GS-07: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting with developing and recommending safety/occupational health policy to higher levels of management; applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety and health requirements; assisting developing safety and occupational health standards, regulations, practices, and procedures to eliminate or control potential hazards; inspecting workplaces, processes, products, or other systems for compliance with established safety and occupational health policies or standards and to identify potential new hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). OR Education: One full year of graduate level education with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. OR Superior Academic Achievement. In order to be creditable under this provision, Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled, such as that identified in Education above. Superior Academic Achievement is based on: (1) Class Standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR (2) Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) - Applicants must have a grade-point average of either (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.; OR (3) Honor Society Membership - Applicants may be considered eligible based on membership in one of the approved national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies (https://www.achsnatl.org/). OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Oral CommunicationPublic Safety and SecurityTechnical CompetenceWritten Communication Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-05).
