As a Legal Assistant at the GS-0986-6/7, you will be part of Retirement Services, Office of Personnel Management.
Incumbent will collaborate with Appeals Specialists to deliver comprehensive support, encompassing maintenance of an internal tracking database and meticulous evaluation and upkeep of files pertinent to appeal decisions, ensuring alignment with relevant legislation.
Not a remote position and will require reporting onsite to the Theodore Roosevelt Federal Building, Washington, DC.
Duties
Interacting effectively with diverse groups of people to exchange and collect information.
Responding to general queries both in person and on the phone to ensure accurate responses are given.
Assisting specialists in preparing for pre-hearing conferences and hearings.
Collecting, organize, preserving, and retrieving organization decisions and legislation pertaining to disability benefits for the reference files.
Assisting in the preparation of the defense of legal decisions before a Board in the more routine, straight forward appeals with the direction of the legal specialists.
Qualifications
For the GS-6 level: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in the Federal service that includes assist with interpreting laws, rules, regulations and written guidelines, assist in reviewing legal, retirement or other documents for accuracy in accordance with applicable rules and regulations; and providing assistance in preparing written responses to inquiries.
For the GS-7 level: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service that includes assist with applying and interpreting laws, rules, regulations and written guidelines; reviewing legal, medical, retirement or other documents for accuracy in accordance with applicable rules and regulations; and preparing written responses to inquiries as well as using a variety of tracking and/or financial collection systems. Familiarity with the administrative hearing process or court systems is desired.
Merit promotion applicants must meet the time-in-grade requirement as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F.
One year at the GS-5 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-6 level.
One year at the GS-6 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-7 level.
