Duties

Directs the Human Performance Laboratory for the Directorate of Athletics (AD), United States Air Force Academy. Manages testing, training, education, consultation, and data analysis for human performance optimization relevant to the ADs objectives. Manages strategic oversight and supervises the laboratory's Sports Nutrition and Sports Psychology services and the Assistant Director of the Human Performance Laboratory. Serves as lead subject matter expert for all human performance initiatives supporting USAFA AD. Manages the strategic guidance and implementation of human performance optimization in USAFA's AD. Applies physiology, research methods, statistics, data/athlete management system, and metric analysis expertise when advising leadership on development, assessment, and execution of institutional and occupational competencies. Manages applied research and analysis projects focused on performance optimization, injury prevention, and other human performance related projects with the USAFA AD. Develops research and analysis, designs plans and requests resources to support projects focused on human performance. Provides technical advice, consultation, and mentorship to USAFA and inter-agency human performance programs. Advises on programs for athletic development to meet current and future needs. Utilizes information gathered by data management platforms, direct observation, client interaction, and training, as well as interviews with teams, to select or develop evidence-based initiatives to mitigate hazards and barriers to optimal health and to enhance athletic performance. Provides oversight and direction for the laboratory's Sports Nutrition and Sports Psychology services. Leads the laboratory staff in the division's established vision, guidance, direction, direct support, and coordination of efforts to support the AD's mission and human performance optimization objectives. Collaborates with AD leadership, Human Performance staff, athletic trainers, sports medicine, and strength coaches in selecting, developing, and executing risk-mitigation and performance-enhancement strategies in support of USAFA's NCAA intercollegiate programs. Applies current, evidence-based human performance optimization research, guidelines, testing, and training in support of athletes and AD objectives. Guides and accomplishes performance assessments including, but not limited to, anaerobic power, oxygen consumption, metabolic rate, body composition, lactate threshold, running economy, total hemoglobin mass, biomechanical, motion capture, and sports-vision performance. Translates data from testing and athlete management systems into meaningful results. Conducts thorough individual and team assessments and provides evidenced-based services to optimize cadet-athlete and team performance. Collaborates with staff to meet or exceed NCAA health and safety standards. Manages data analytics programs pertaining to human performance research efforts and intercollegiate athletics. Leads human physical training programs involving analyzing individual data, prescribing exercise, conducting exercise, and evaluating programs to improve quality. Evaluates new products and technological developments for use within human performance optimization realms. Teaches AD physical education curriculum. Leverages scientific background and expertise to incorporate human performance optimization principles and content into curriculum. Prepares course materials as required. Counsels and evaluates assigned students as appropriate. Effectively provides student assessment and motivation. Provides extra instruction outside normal class hours for students who require or request it. Oversees human performance student internship programs, ensuring didactic, research and practical training requirements are met in accordance with educational agreements. Directs, coordinates, and oversees work through subordinate supervisors. Advises staff regarding policies, procedures, and directives of higher-level management. Selects candidates for subordinate positions taking into consideration skills and qualifications, and mission requirements. Serves as the lead physiology and human performance expert. Recognizes professional and administrative implications of policy changes and makes recommendations to optimize the impacts on cadets. Develops and contributes to scientific modeling for evidence-based data collection and improvement strategies for athletes. Prepares written evaluation reports with scientific impressions and recommendations. Manages the Lab's physiological, nutritional, and psychology facilities, equipment, systems, and programs. Maintains relationships and agreements with others in related professional disciplines to stay current with new developments and trends. Conducts athletic performance relevant research, participates in peer reviewed publication of human performance research, and attends and presents at national and international conferences.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Must hold at minimum, a PhD in exercise physiology. 2. Must have at least 10 years post-graduate experience in Human Performance Optimization methodologies and exercise science applied within high performing athletic, military, or tactical populations. 3. Must be qualified and proficient in performing and interpreting physiologic testing. 4. Should demonstrate experience in sports science research, sports science data management, statistical analysis, and scientific writing. ACADEMIC DISCIPLINES: Exercise Physiology. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Prior teaching, faculty, or athletic coaching experience is desired. Candidates will have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching. Leadership experience in curriculum development and academic assessment is desired. Applicants will be assessed based on education, evidence of teaching effectiveness, quality of scholarship, and demonstrated service to educational institutions and the discipline commensurate with years in the discipline.
