Duties

Major Duties of the Position: Under the direction of the Associate Dean/Director of the McDermott Library at the United States Air Force Academy, the Assistant Director of Public Services supports the overall planning, supervision, and coordination of staff in Research Services, Circulation, and Interlibrary Loan. This position recommends, develops, and/or reviews policies and workflows in public services to best suit the needs of a contemporary, undergraduate-focused library while ensuring coordination of efforts with library staff counterparts. The Assistant Director supports library assessments using a variety of data to provide the Associate Dean/Director with information needed to evaluate effectiveness of library programs and services, ensures delivery by research librarians of well-organized and effective information literacy instruction in groups or individually, collaborates with direct reports and peers to promote services, and supports the use by research librarians of contemporary software that provides user-focused access to online materials. As a member of the senior leadership team, the Assistant Director assists with library strategic planning, prepares proposals for review, ensures alignment of public services to the McDermott Library strategic plan and to the Academy strategic plan. The position works with subordinates in setting performance expectations, setting professional development goals to enhance skills, and ensures robust communication during project planning and execution across divisional lines. The Assistant Director is responsible for ensuring adequate coverage of public service functions during peak workloads and holiday time. This position serves on library and Academy-wide working groups or committees as appropriate and leverages library partnerships with other teaching and learning centers at the Academy to promote library public services.

  • The salary shown is the minimum (Annual) amount to be paid and may be set higher commensurate with individual's qualifications and experience.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Masters in Library Science or Library Information Sciences from an ALA-accredited program or foreign equivalent; minimum of 3-5 year professional academic library experience in public services, including successful, effective, and direct supervision of academic library staff for a minimum of two years. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Documented experience in effective information literacy instruction in person and/or online; experience collaborating with teaching faculty to promote library public services. Demonstrated assessment of public service programs using qualitative and/or quantitative data to initiate effective changes that are designed to improve services. Evidence of working effectively, positively, and collaboratively with peers and subordinates in the workplace, including library and institutional committees or working groups. Evidence of professional engagement through publications, professional presentations and/or committee work in the library profession regionally/nationally. ACADEMIC DISCIPLINES: Master's degree in Library Science or Library information Sciences. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Second graduate degree in a discipline taught at the US Air Force Academy.
