NIST works with industry and science to advance innovation and improve quality of life. We're looking for a Physical Scientist to join our team!
This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.
Duties
The Building Energy & Environment Division enables cost-effective, energy-efficient, grid-integrated buildings that have healthy and comfortable indoor environments and reduced environmental impacts through advances in measurement science and standards development.
We are looking for a Physical Scientist to join our team!
If selected, you will:
Conduct a variety of hands-on measurement tasks aimed at investigating the electrical and optical characteristics of extended and point defects in wide bandgap semiconductor materials and devices.
Perform luminescence imaging experiments with wide-field hyperspectral or confocal microscopy imaging systems and map the distribution and spectral emission characteristics of defects over large sample areas.
Perform other relevant electrical characterization work, such as current-voltage measurements to support and complement the optical characterization work.
Perform data analysis, computation, and modeling to understand and explain the underlying physical effects in wide bandgap semiconductor devices.
Communicate and work closely with team members, other NIST teams, and external teams.
Present findings in regular meetings and publish work as appropriate.
The ideal candidate will have proficiency in programming skills such as MATLAB or Python and will have demonstrated track record in publication of scientific findings.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
A. Degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to the above basic requirements, applicants must have at least one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the GS-09 (ZP-II at NIST) grade level. Specialized experience is described as experience with materials or device characterization techniques (such as electrical characterization of diodes and transistors, spectroscopy, and/or scanning electron microscopy), as well as experience with fabrication methods (such as photolithography and/or thermal evaporation).
OR
Master's or equivalent graduate degree.
OR
Combination of gradudate level education and specialized experience.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done. We will credit all qualifying volunteer experience in your application.
The qualification requirements in this vacancy announcement are based on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook.
