Click on "Learn more about this agency" button below to view Eligibilities being considered and other IMPORTANT information. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as Administrative Support Assistant, working in the Chaplain's Office at Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA)-Fort Sam Houston.

Duties

Provides a variety of administrative services in support to the Chapel Office. Uses multiple office automation software with varied functions to provide database management and data systems support. Coordinates all chapel requests for funeral and wedding support.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Clerical and Administrative Support Positions. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-04, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes knowledge of the functions, established policies, and procedures of the organization in order to provide information and answer questions regarding religious activities, direct visitors and phone calls, route correspondence, schedule appointments, maintain calendars and to summarize and retrieve required information form files. Knowledge is also used to ensure sacrament documentation such as marriage certifications are followed in accordance with the established requirements. Knowledge and skill in operating office automation equipment and a variety of software package to include word processing, spreadsheet, database, calendars, E-mail, etc. The skill of a qualified typist is required. OR EDUCATION: : Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. NOTE: You must submit a copy of transcripts. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position, only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-4 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-5 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Thorough knowledge of the organization's mission, structure, programs and policies; and ability to locate, collect, assemble and compose data and information for program reports, inquiries and technical correspondence. 2. Knowledge of extensive rules, procedures, operations, functions and commitments applied to administrative and clerical assignments to perform the procedural and administrative work of the office, such as screening calls and visitors, maintaining supervisor's calendar, preparing, reviewing and editing documents, locating and assembling information for various reports, and maintaining files/records. 3. Knowledge required to coordinate the work of the office with the work of other offices and for recognizing the need for such coordination in various circumstances. 4. Knowledge of correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization and format to accurately prepare and edit written correspondence and reports and knowledge of various office automation software programs, tools, and techniques to support office operations and produce a variety of documents such as memorandums, reports, spreadsheets, databases and graphs. 5. Skill in typing; a qualified typist is required 6. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
