You will serve as an Engineering Technician in the Welding Engineering Division, Quality Assurance Office of PSNS and IMF.

Duties

You will perform work on all assigned projects, and carry out assignments related to Welding Engineering and/or Nuclear Engineering in support of the repair and maintenance of fleet surface ships and submarines. You will conduct studies and tests to establish procedure specifications for welding and its allied processes used in the fabrication and repair of hull and structural components for nonnuclear and nuclear applications. You will interpret test results and prepare written reports and procedures including welding procedures. You will interpret and advise on instructions that involve welding and prescribe preventive measures to minimize defects involving thermal joining fabrication processes. You will interpret standards and conduct experimental testing and development projects to establish standards for insuring quality in the metal joining process; and accomplishes other assigned work. You will conduct tests on new welding materials, equipment, and processes to determine whether they are suitable for production welding and meet specification requirements.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift when in an area where it's required.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • The work is generally sedentary in nature; however, occasional walking, climbing and bending may be required.
  • Approximately 75 percent of the work is performed in an office setting, 15 percent in welding laboratory setting, while the remainder occurs in the shipyard production areas, and aboard the ships.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-08 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: analyzing technical engineering procedures or work methods and techniques of welding principals and theory and practices as well as effects of welding on the metallurgical and mechanical properties of metals, to identify, evaluate and resolve operational problems or work control deficiencies and recommend improved work procedures or corrective action in support of the repair, modification, or overhaul of ships or submarines.
