You will serve as a Physical Scientist in the Bathymetric Branch, Navigation Support Division, Hydrographic Department, and Naval Oceanographic Office of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS.
Duties
You will analyze navigation or bathymetric automated system performance to determine data quality.
You will process hydrographic or bathymetric and navigational data using knowledge of scientific applications.
You will deliver instructions and training in the use of various data processing software and equipment.
You will supply technical guidance and training to junior employees to increase their knowledge, skills, and abilities.
You will perform data collection, processing, and formatting of data for product development and data transfer.
You will use the principles, theories, practices, and techniques of the physical sciences for data collection, analysis, and production of results.

- This is a bargaining unit position.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience can be defined as the following:
Experience processing incoming refined field navigation and sonar data to a gridded format for bathymetry and hydrographic models to be include in all Divisional data bases in support of the Data Warehouse (DWH), Oceanographic and Atmospheric Modeling Library (OAML) in the form of the Digital Bathymetric Database-Variable resolution (DBDBV), and bathymetric and/or hydrographic products delivered to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and maintaining quality assurance of these models and performing updates of these models on a scheduled basis.
Experience researching, reviewing and acquiring, as needed, archival data, charts and publications to determine geomorphological characteristics of areas under compilation.
Experience performing automated data analyses of bathymetric, hydrographic and related data sets from various sources and evaluated resultant data files for accuracy, completeness and reliability and applies adjustments or corrections where necessary.
Experience leading and mentoring a person or team of junior scientist(s) within the branch and providing technical guidance to internal employees on assigned projects.
Experience providing instruction for new personnel on proper scientific analysis techniques and provides continuing technical guidance to lower grade physical scientists.
Experience maintaining technical and scientific knowledge pertaining to Branch functions.

Education
Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess the following:
- Applicants must possess a successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelors' or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
- Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The quality of the combination of education and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation, and is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field. In addition to courses in the major and related fields, a typical college degree would have included courses that involved analysis, writing, critical thinking, research, etc. These courses would have provided an applicant with skills and abilities sufficient to perform progressively more responsible work in the occupation. Therefore, creditable experience should have demonstrated similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the work of the occupation.
