You will serve as a Physical Scientist/Oceanographer in the Ocean Databases Branch, Ocean Databases and Analysis Division, Oceanographic Department of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS.

Duties

You will be responsible for the development, construction, maintenance, and upgrades of data models, data bases, and environmental products for Physical Oceanographic parameter. You will provide guidance and direction to lower grade personnel in the operation of equipment/software tools and adherence to stand data handling procedures. You will use computers, computer networks, Automated Data Processing (ADP) peripherals, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) applications to support exercises and operations.

  • This position requires up to 50% field duty supporting NAVOCEANO surveys in accordance with the requirements stated in NAVOINST 3120.13D.
  • The incumbent may spend as much as 50% of the time aboard Navy survey vessels, requiring strenuous physical exertion.
  • The incumbent cannot be seriously prone to motion sickness.
  • Administrative travel may be required for project coordination, meetings, or scientific conferences. When traveling, living accommodations, comforts, and recreational activities are sometimes substandard.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1. Experience with the concepts, principles, and practices of physical oceanography to conduct scientific analysis, 2. Experience analyzing and determining trends in oceanographic data, 3. Experience providing tailored physical oceanographic products derived from numerical ocean models, remotely sensed and in situ data, historical observed data, climatologies, literature, and experience, 4.Experience integrating new technologies and capabilities into the collection, processing, or data base management of physical oceanographic data, 5. Experience in computers, computer networks, Automated Data Processing (ADP) peripherals, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) applications to support exercises and operations. Education

Basic Education Requirement:

1301:
Possession of a bachelor's degree or higher in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
A combination of education and experience with education equivalent to one of the majors shown above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

1360:
Possession of a bachelor's degree with a major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences.
OR
A combination of education and experience which includes course work in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
