The Maintenance Worker position serves as the Grounds Irrigation Specialist for the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System. The work involves the maintenance, repair, and construction of the Grounds irrigation Systems and seasonal gardening tasks to maintain the landscape and interior patios and ponds. The position requires knowledge of power and manual equipment and tools of the trade, as well as the ability to troubleshoot load voltage systems for irrigation.
Duties
Major duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Assisting supervisor in inventorying and ordering irrigation parts.
Installing new and repair existing irrigation systems.
Installing, operating and maintaining electrical time clocks involved with the existing irrigation system.
Inspecting and testing all irrigation systems and timers to provide a preventive maintenance program.
Accomplishing the work required in the maintenance and general care of lawns, trees, shrubs, and flower beds.
Installing and repairing valves (both electrical and manual), sprinklers, pipes, electrical clock timers, and other irrigation devices as required.
Repairing large pipes i.e. PVC, black iron, galvanized copper, and drain pipes.
Calculating irrigation system designs for proper coverage and water pressure.
Establishing a preventive maintenance program on irrigation equipment and systems.
Ability to use all power and manual equipment and tools utilized in the irrigation and Grounds maintenance trades.
Ornamental horticulture to transplant, fertilize, seed, aerate soil, lay sod, plant, prune, etc.
Identifying weeds, plant diseases, and insects and recommending methods of control as weeding, pruning, cultivating or proper chemical usage and application. Chemical knowledge includes use of fungicides, insecticides and herbicides.
Knowledge of plant growth, soil conditions and PH requirements and seasonal requirements for accomplishment of tasks involved in the trade.
Properly mixing chemicals, sand, humus, and topsoil in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
Skill in the preventive maintenance for all equipment and tools.
Setting up the necessary equipment, tools, and materials to complete the task assigned by his/her supervisor.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Work requires frequent walking, standing, pushing carts and wheelbarrows, as well as bending for long periods of time. The incumbent works outside in cool, hot, and inclement weather; works with ladders, in wet areas and waterways, uses gas powered pumps and large power hand tools. At times, incumbent will be required to perform heavy lifting up to 90 pounds.
Working Conditions: Work is done mostly outside where the incumbent is subject to smog, hot sun, and inclement weather conditions. The incumbent is also exposed to dirt, soil, water, dust, and mud. The incumbent must wear protective gear such as gloves, safety shoes, face mask, and rubber clothing. Incumbent is subject to minor injuries, such as bruises, cuts, and scrapes. There is a possibility of broken bones from falls and back injuries. The incumbent is exposed to bites from insects and other life-threatening hazards such as snakes.
