This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration, at the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System, VA Medical Center in the Facilities Management Service, within the Mechanical Structural Shop. The primary purpose of the position is to serve as the Lead Maintenance Mechanic and will be responsible for assisting the second shift personnel in the Maintenance Mechanic shop under the purview of the supervisor leading 10 structural and mechanical personnel.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to: Issue workers the instructions received from supervisors and getting work started by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group led. Troubleshooting mechanical systems and controls, reading blueprints, schematics and written technical information, using all types of hand tools, electrical, air and hydraulic tools, presses, porta-power with attachments. Maintaining a current knowledge, and answering questions of other workers on procedures policies, written instructions, and other directives (for example, technical orders). Advising other workers to follow instructions received from supervisors, and to meet deadlines. Constructing containers such as crates, boxes, or cases for use in storage or shipment of materials. Maintaining woodworking tools and repairing/adjusting turning belts and oiling bearings of woodworking machinery. Having the knowledge, skill, and abilities necessary to lay a variety of brick, block, tile, and stone to accurately line up courses that are horizontally and vertically straight, must have the ability to spread mortar/grout to obtain even distribution and thickness. Having knowledge of tools and materials (i.e., shovels, hoes, sand, lime, cement, and water) required to mix mortar and break up lumps to obtain the desired consistency. Checking work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met. Maintaining accurate, up-to-date records on work performed, such as work orders and maintenance records. Assuring that safety and housekeeping rules are followed (for example, assuring that limits of safe machine operation are not exceeded and that all tools are used properly). Having knowledge of metalworking and welding trades as they relate to the overall requirements of the position to accomplish necessary repair of mechanical equipment. Performing repairs on existing brick, block, tile and stone walls, partitions, and walkways. Having the knowledge skills and ability to erect metal framework by placing runners and studs in proper position and joining and fastening using screws and bolts. Making sure needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations. Also, required to push, pull, reach, walk, stand, crawl, kneel, bend and work from ladders, scaffolds, cramped positions over and around mechanical equipment for extended periods of time.
