This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System, VA Medical Center (VAMC) in the Facilities Management Service. The primary purpose of the position is to serve as the Lead Maintenance Mechanic being responsible for assisting shift personnel in the Maintenance Mechanic shop under the purview of the supervisor leading mechanical personnel.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Issue workers the instructions received from supervisors and getting work started by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group led
Skilled in troubleshooting mechanical systems and controls, reading blueprints, schematics and written technical information, using all types of hand tools, electrical, air and hydraulic tools, presses, porta-power with attachments
Maintain a current knowledge, and answer questions of other workers on procedures policies, written instructions, and other directives (for example, technical orders)
Advise other workers to follow instructions received from supervisors, and to meet deadlines
Construct containers such as crates, boxes, or cases for use in storage or shipment of materials
Maintains woodworking tools and repairs and adjusts turning belts and oils bearings of woodworking machinery
Have knowledge, skill, and abilities necessary to lay a variety of brick, block, tile, and stone to accurately line up courses that are horizontally and vertically straight, must have the ability to spread mortar/grout to obtain even distribution and thickness
Have knowledge of tools and materials (i.e., shovels, hoes, sand, lime, cement, and water) required to mix mortar and break up lumps to obtain the desired consistency
Checking work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met
Maintain accurate, up-to-date records on work performed, such as work orders and maintenance records
Assure that safety and housekeeping rules are followed (for example, assuring that limits of safe machine operation are not exceeded and that all tools are used properly)
Have knowledge of metalworking and welding trades as they relate to the overall requirements of the position to accomplish necessary repair of mechanical equipment
Perform repairs on existing brick, block, tile and stone walls, partitions, and walkways
Have the knowledge skills and ability to erect metal framework by placing runners and studs in proper position and joining and fastening using screws and bolts
See to it that needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations
Work Schedule: 2:00pm - 10:30pm Monday - Friday

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Must be physically able to lift and handle heavy objects while assembling, repairing, and installing various mechanical units related to the trade. Also, required to push, pull, reach, walk, stand, crawl, kneel, bend and work from ladders, scaffolds, cramped positions over and around mechanical equipment for extended periods of time.
