You will serve as an INTERDISCIPLINARY PHYSICAL SCIENTIST/ OCEANOGRAPHER in the Unmanned Technologies Branch, Unmanned Oceanography Division, Oceanographic Department, Naval Oceanographic Office of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS.

Duties

You will assist in the development, maintenance and preparation of multiple physical oceanographic instrumentation data acquisition systems, which may include CTDs, XBTs, ADCPS, marine optic sensors, drifters, current meters, and ocean gliders. You will be responsible for analyses and interpretation of diverse physical oceanographic data and the preparation of technical reports and environmental products for Navy applications. You will act as a senior lead knowledgeable in all sources multi-discipline information and data fusion for unmanned technologies, such as drifters, profiling floats, and ocean gliders. You will provide instruction to all levels of personnel (e.g. entry level to senior level) on proper scientific analysis techniques. You will make formal presentations to senior staff level visitors and at DOD and national meetings and conferences. You will be responsible for the processing of collected data and the quality of data obtained from the oceanographic collection instrumentation, equipment, and UxV systems. You will be responsible for performing well as an experienced scientist working with other scientists and multi-disciplinary teams in the support of emerging and existing data collection and UxV system.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: General Physical Science Series, 1301: Experience in oceanographic data collection systems, UxV systems, the application of statical and physical sciences, understanding of methods for oceanographic analysis, and product derivation. Experience having intensive, practical knowledge of oceanography and unmanned technologies including drifters, profiling floats, and ocean gliders, and will be expected to develop new methods, approaches, and procedures to accomplish their work assignments including developing and documenting data collection and processing methods and procedures. Experience assessing Navy requirements and developing or designing methods to satisfy the requirements, requiring originality and inventiveness and interacting with multi-disciplinary teams and at times coordinating with external scientists or DoD interests to coordinate actions related to survey operations. Oceanography Series, 1360 Experience ensuring that branch laboratory facilities are maintained with the proper physical oceanographic data collection instrumentation and data processing capabilities for successful survey data collection and interpretation. Experience developing procedures for the development of instrumentation and collection of physical oceanographic data and establishing and documenting data collection, data processing, and quality control procedures, and data storage techniques for in situ physical oceanographic data. Experience conceptualizing, developing, implementing, and documenting new or changes to existing shipboard system physical oceanographic data collection instrumentation. Experience planning and coordinating the implementation, testing, and integration of new shipboard system physical oceanographic data collection and processing capabilities as you will be responsible for developing the approach, selecting the tools required, thorough testing and evaluation of the results and reporting the findings. Experience participating in interdeparmental and interagency meetings and committees with oceanographers and others from a variety of disciplines in order to integrate oceanographic data collection techniques into survey operations. Experience interacting with NAVOCEANO codes to ensure data collected meets operational requirements and participates in interdeparmental and intra-command meetings and committees to resolve common problems through both oral and written communications. General Physical Science Series, 1301:
  • Applicants must possess a successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelors' or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
  • Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The quality of the combination of education and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation, and is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field. In addition to courses in the major and related fields, a typical college degree would have included courses that involved analysis, writing, critical thinking, research, etc. These courses would have provided an applicant with skills and abilities sufficient to perform progressively more responsible work in the occupation. Therefore, creditable experience should have demonstrated similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the work of the occupation.

  • Applicants must possess a successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelors' or higher degree that included 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology. Plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences.
OR
  • Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The quality of the combination of education and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation, and is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field.
