This position is located within the Education Service Line office at the VA Medical Center in Salem, VA. The Program Support Assistant - Education provides administrative and technical support in the organization, planning, implementation, and quality management for the various residency/training programs.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** The major duties include but are not limited to: Provides administrative coordination for the management of graduate medical training programs; Interprets and applies regulations and procedures concerning residency/training programs; Collects, reviews, and screens all applications and supporting documentation for residency programs; Handles all correspondence from candidates; Maintains applicant files, assists in ranking, and prepares rank order list for submission to the National Residency Match Program; Collects, researches, and analyzes data for the preparation of reports required by education; Maintains automated system of program-specific data to track items such as performance tracking of residents and student's attendance, clinical documentation, and VA required education; Coordinates the weekly on-call schedule for the medical students and residents; Manages assignment of the weekly Grand Rounds schedule; Establishes rotation of subspecialties and identifies responsible staff physicians for each presentation; and Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications

To qualify at the GS-7 grade level, you must meet the following requirement: Specialized Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6) in the federal service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Program Support Assistant - Education, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes coordinating with higher education; collecting and analyzing data for the preparation of reports, maintaining spreadsheets; communicating with educational institutions and residents to ensure training program success; and working with residents towards research and educational opportunities. Note: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hour worked per week. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: CommunicationComputer SkillsInterpersonal SkillsManages and Organizes Information IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Typically, the person in this position sits comfortably to do the work. There may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying, or pushing carts of light items such as papers, books, small parts, or driving an automobile, etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work. Considerable time is spent at a computer. The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts, which require normal safety precaution typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, or libraries. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Work is accomplished in an office setting primarily, but also includes other areas throughout this medical center and affiliated hospitals.
