You will serve as a INTERDISCIPLINARY PHYSICIST/GEOPHYSICIST/OCEANOGRAPHER/MATHEMATICIAN in the Seafloor Interactions Branch, Acoustic Modeling and Databases Division, Acoustics Department, Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS.

Duties

You will serve as principal scientist for development, implementation, and maintenance of assigned littoral and blue water geophysical and acoustic gridded databases. You will collect available data, and plan NAVOCEANO geophysical and/or acoustic surveys in assigned data deficient geographic regions. You will serve as principal scientist for assigned Anti-Submarine Warfare acoustic performance predictions and analyses, and forensic acoustic reconstructions. You will serve as principal scientist responsible for collecting, analyzing, and producing geospatial data and products. You will maintain, enhance, and validate software utilized for database development, acoustic modeling, reconstructions, and geospatial product generation. You will serve as principal scientist responsible for managing Department’s Information Technology (IT) resources. You will perform field duty as Data Manager, Lead, or as member of multi-disciplinary survey team in accordance with NAVOCEANO Survey Duty Instruction.

  • Up to 50% of work assignments may be in the field aboard survey ships, aircraft, and/or at remote land sites.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Experience and knowledge of underwater acoustics and sound propagation; 2) Experience using underwater acoustic models to predict transmission loss and determine geoacoustic properties; 3) Experience analyzing measured environmental and acoustic data, including transmission loss; 4) Experience developing acoustic databases; 5) Experience planning acoustic data collection surveys; 6) Experience applying standard mathematical and statistical methods to data; 7) Experience with scientific computer programming; 8) Experience with Geographic Information System (GIS); 9) Experience documenting scientific and technical information; 10) Experience presenting scientific and technical information. Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.

Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Geophysics Series, 1313
Degree: that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.).

Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Oceanography Series, 1360
Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences.

Degree: mathematics; or the equivalent of a major that included at least 24 semester hours in mathematics.
