You will serve as a FIRE PROTECTION INSPECTOR in the Fire & Emergency Services Subdivision of NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY PORTSMOUTH NSY.

Duties

You will compile statistical data concerning plans, review, fire inspections and corrections, fire investigations, and fire and life safety education activities. You will brief the public to promote a fire protection or prevention program. You will draft corrective plans of action for fire code violations observed during an inspection. You will develop a continual fire prevention or fire protection training program for serviced activities. You will recommend risk management techniques for a fire department's risk management program. You will perform other duties as assigned.

  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.

Qualifications

GS-08: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: · Experience interpreting and applying knowledge of national, Department of Defense (DoD), Navy and local fire codes, standards, regulations, and instructions to detect and eliminate fire and life safety hazards; · Experience selecting the applicable code or standard relevant to particular types of facilities and hazards, type of construction and other variables, as well as analyzing and interpreting codes and standards to make compliance determinations; · Experience using oral communication and public speaking ability to provide fire and life safety training and events; · Experience writing reports, case notes, briefings, instructions and regulations, and correspondence; AND · Experience conducting postfire investigation to determine cause and origination. ***In addition to the specialized experience listed above, at the GS-08 grade level, this position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications: HAZMAT Awareness, Fire Instructor I or Fire Life Safety Educator I, Fire Inspector I/II, CPR (American Heart Association "Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers" or equivalent). These certifications must have been awarded by DoD, IFSAC or Pro Board to meet the requirement. If you do not possess all of the above certifications you will be rated ineligible. Copies of Certifications MUST be submitted with your application*** GS-07: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: · Experience interpreting and applying knowledge of national, Department of Defense (DoD), Navy and local fire codes, standards, regulations, and instructions to detect and eliminate fire and life safety hazards; · Experience assisting with selecting the applicable code or standard relevant to particular types of facilities and hazards, type of construction and other variables, as well as analyzing and interpreting codes and standards to make compliance determinations; · Experience using oral communication and public speaking ability to provide fire and life safety training and events; · Experience writing reports, case notes, briefings, instructions and regulations, and correspondence; AND · Experience assisting with conducting postfire investigation to determine cause and origination. For the GS-07 grade level, the incumbent will be in a career ladder development status, expected to earn the certifications required for the GS-08 grade level within 12 months of appointment, while participating in on-the-job training.
