You will serve as a SAFETY AND OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH SPECIALIST in the Safety Office of MARINE CORPS AIR GROUND COMBAT CTR.

Duties

You will develop, conduct, coordinate and evaluate the Occupational Safety and Health, Ground Mishap Reporting and Investigation, Explosives Safety, Gas Free Engineering, Laser/Radiation Safety, and Motor Vehicle Safety Programs. You will address matters in relation to industrial hygiene, fire safety and environmental issues. You will review plans for new construction or modifications of facilities to ensure that completed work will be in compliance with applicable safety standards. You will recommend and apply timely abatement action to eliminate or control unsafe or unhealthful working conditions or processes. You will conduct formal safety investigations of serious ground mishaps occurring on-duty, on or off the combat center.

  • Generally, current federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level. This requirement is called time-in-grade. Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final SECRET security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • You will be required to lift moderately heavy items, and occasionally lift and carry items over 40 pounds.

Qualifications

GS-11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: inspecting, surveying, and providing guidance to employees engaged in industrial, maintenance, medical, operational, training or administrative functions. GS-09: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: surveying and providing guidance to employees engaged in industrial, maintenance, medical, operational, or administrative functions. Education

In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:

GS-11: Specialized experience may be substituted with a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene) or a degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study form among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology; or three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene) or a degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study form among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology; or an LL.M. degree that is related to the position being filled.

GS-09: Specialized experience may be substituted with a master's or equivalent graduate degree in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene) or a degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study form among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology; or two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene) or a degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study form among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology; or an LL.B. or J.D. that is related to the position being filled.
