This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, United States Coast Guard, Fifth Coast Guard District, Sector Virginia, Command Center in Portsmouth, VA.

Duties

This position serves as a direct representative of the Sector Commander, and provides leadership and training to other military and civilian SCC watch-standers. The incumbent has a wide range of responsibilities, primarily accountable for administration of the unit-training program. This includes development, administration and maintenance of a comprehensive training program for all four watch positions, with oversight of all required performance qualification standards, training modules, recertification standards, on-the-job-training (OJT) and unit indoctrination.

  • Occasional 24 hour watches may be required
  • This position requires a Secret clearance.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • A final offer of employment is contingent upon a negative drug test result.
  • A one year probationary period may be required.
  • The position requires a valid state driver's license.

Qualifications

Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skill and ability to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.   Examples of specialized experience include: standing watch as a command duty officer, monitoring search and rescue cases, monitoring law enforcement cases, coordinating responses to marine environmental incidents, maintaining cognizance of security zone enforcement patrols, monitoring response to marine casualties, interfacing with federal agencies regarding Agency operations, utilizing automated information systems to track and collect operational information relevant to a mission, and providing leadership and training to other watch-standers.      National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. The Office of Personnel management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees.  If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule, C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
