This vacancy announcement has been extended. This Medical Administrative Assistant position serves as the Administrative Officer of the Day (AOD) and is in the Business Office located the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, MO. This position is responsible to represent both the Medical Center Director and the Chief, Business Office, on all administrative matters occurring when assigned to other than a normal tour of duty

The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-7. At the GS-6 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-7. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher-level work, and availability of funds. DUTIES: Administrative Support: Serves as the Administrative Officer of the Day (AOD), during irregular duty hours. The AOD is responsible to the office of the Chief, Business Office (CBO), whose responsibility is to represent both the executive management and the CBO on all administrative matters occurring when assigned to other than a normal tour of duty. Provides administrative authority, guidance, and advice to the Medical Officer of the Day (MOD), Nursing office of the Day (NOD), and all other clinical staff concerning administrative matters necessary for operation of the medical center during other than normal tours. Performs administrative matters as the MOD and NOD for clinical matters, working as a team to carry out top management responsibility during other than regular working hours. Organizational and Community Relations: Oversees determination of applicant's eligibility, obtaining income and insurance information for appropriate applicants, counseling Veterans with respect to assignment of priority groups and copayments if applicable. Personnel Management Support: Delegated authority to act on behalf of executive management to initiate actions dealing with any disaster situation, in accordance with hospital-wide disaster plan. Guides personnel operating on the inpatient units and clinic areas and serves as an advisory source. Data Validation and Utilization: Participates in special projects or analytical studies of problem areas; conducts investigations and/or systematic reviews of operations; prepares workflow charts, work standards, and staffing recommendations; makes recommendations or suggestions for improved methods and procedures; coordinates, implements, and completes accepted changes. Work Schedule includes providing coverage 24/7 (including weekends and holidays). Applicant is required to work overtime and alternate schedule based on operational needs and coverage requirements. Tour of Duty may include: 12-Hour shifts, 6:00pm - 6:00am, Sunday (off), Monday-Tuesday (on), Wednesday/Thursday (off), Friday/Saturday (on). Alternating, 6:00pm - 6:00am, Sunday (on), Monday-Tuesday (off), Wednesday/Thursday (on), Friday/Saturday (off). OR, alternating 10 hour shifts Saturday-Tuesday, Wednesday-Saturday, or Thursday-Sunday between 7:30am - 6:00pm, 6:00pm - 5:30am Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized Bargaining Unit Position: No Financial Disclosure Report: Not Required

GS-6 SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires one full year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this Medical Administrative Assistant GS-6 position to be filled. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes scheduling patient appointments and capturing income data for patient means and counseling patient on copay responsibilities; using various computer software programs to prepare correspondence and various reports relating to patient care activities. GS-7 SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires one full year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this Medical Administrative Assistant GS-7 position to be filled. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-6 level in the Federal service. In addition to the specialized experience for the lower grade above, Specialized experience includes participating in special projects or analytical studies of problem areas, making recommendations on methods and procedures for clinical and administrative matters; and providing management with guidance on procedural, patient entitlements, legal and administrative requirements. AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
