Duties

You will teach seminars in the 7200-series Operational Planning Line of Education. You will supervise, mentor, and evaluate planning problems, briefs, written products, wargames, decision games, and other adult learning activities in the 7200 Operational Planning series. You will design new curriculum informed by joint, service, combined, and competitor doctrine; recent operational experience; red teaming/alternative analysis techniques; and force modernization programs. You will coordinate, administer, and execute applied learning events such as planning exercises, war games, staff rides, etc. You will meet annually with SAW alumni across the force and in the Pentagon to solicit input on emerging ideas in the force. You will develop, supervises, and evaluates graduate-level course of instruction designed to meet learning outcomes established by the faculty and approved by MCU leadership. You will attend MCU working groups and other strategy and planning forums as required by the Dean, Deputy Director, and/or Director.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final TOP SECRET SCI security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

An expert knowledge of military operational art, campaigns, tactics and other relevant functional areas such as intelligence, logistics, communications, etc. to prepare students for follow on assignments as Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) or Joint/Coalition level planners working at flag officer-level headquarters. Experience serving in a USMC 0505 planning position (or other U.S. service equivalent assignment) in a senior military headquarters. Ideally, the candidate will have served in several such assignments in increasingly senior levels of military headquarters. Significant previous experience designing and executing curriculum in a professional military education institution that studies and teaches operational art, campaigning, and tactics is also preferred. 25-30+ or more years as a military officer, including multiple planning assignments at increasingly higher levels of military command: e.g. Marine Expeditionary Brigade; Marine Major Subordinate Command (division, wing, logistic group) level; Marine Expeditionary Force; service component (i.e. Marine Forces Pacific); regional combatant command; Joint Staff; etc. Successful command at the 0-5 and 0-6 levels as SAW's curriculum prepares officers as both lead planners and future commanders. Extensive experience in force and operational planning, including campaign planning and the application of operational art at the major operation/campaign level. A track record of writing for publication and leading/influencing unit and service level operational initiatives. Experience designing and executing educational courses and applied learning activities. Ideally, this background will include leading planning teams in the operating forces or in a supporting establishment setting, as well as significant prior experience as an instructor in a military school teaching and assessing planning. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education

A PhD is not required for this position. Extensive education in service schools, along with extensive practical experience planning and leading planning teams, is required. Candidates must demonstrate extensive military and defense-related professional experience (including significant experience in service, joint, coalition, and/or interagency planning assignments), must hold at least a MA/MS degree, and have a minimum of twenty years of military experience. Additional preferred qualifications include:
    1. Graduate of JPME I/II-level courses.
    2. Graduate of Intermediate Level Education (ILE), Advanced Intermediate Level Education (A-ILE), and Top-Level School (TLS) or equivalent fellowships.
